Strong Bodies
Who doesn't love having a strong body?!
To keep your body strong during the cooler months ensure you’re getting the right vitamins, minerals and good bacteria. I've singled out my top three for this week.
VITAMIN D
The sun isn’t potent enough to provide this during winter months, so supplementation is essential. This lovely vitamin upregulates cathelicidin which is an antimicrobial protein, it kills bacteria, fungi and viral nasties. Decreased vitamin D stores also increase your risk of asthma attacks, infections, eczema, allergies, low moods, soft bones and rickets.
ZINC
Over 100 enzymes in the body are dependent on zinc, because these enzymes are involved in many metabolic pathways, zinc deficiency can present in a range of symptoms. Zinc is very low in New Zealand soils and therefore low in our crops and food, so it is common to not be getting enough dietary zinc.
Suboptimal zinc levels can present as:
Anxiety
Irritability
Recurrent colds and flus
Recurrent chest and ear infections
Low appetite
Poor wound healing
White spots on nails
Acne
It's a major contributor for a healthy immune system!
Probiotics
Absolutely necessary for a strong immune system and a healthy gut. People who take probiotics are sick less frequently than those who don’t. These awesome little super beings pump up the amount of good bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract therefore suppress the growth of the baddies. You can get probiotics in powder form (perfect for kids), tablets or through fermented foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, tempeh, olives and pickles.
A full range of supplements are available through myself.
